Bold and Unique: Top 2008 Jewelry Trends

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

The top jewelry trends for 2008 call for less, but the key ingredient for fashionistas is bold and unique pieces. For those who like to draw a bit of attention, think show-stopper pieces that make a statement and are gem-intensive.

Galas and parties this season will sparkle with socialites wearing larger, signature pieces for the classic “Grace Kelly” look. Women who want to copy the same look should invest in a stunning cuff bracelet or bold ring. While past seasons have focused on the bling, the 2008 season focuses on color. Choose jewels and stones in bright colors and exotic settings.

Always a favorite accessory, right hand rings (formerly known as “cocktail rings”) are not only show-stopping pieces, they match perfectly with well manicured hands. Wearers can choose from a dazzling array of styles. Check out rings set with stones such as turquoise, lapis or jade. Group several smaller rings together or wear one for a bold statement.

Gemstones are on the trend menu this season, favoring shades of blue such as aquamarine blue topaz, sapphire, and tanzanite. For those who find tanzanite is a bit out of their budget, try the lovely iolite. While blue rules the season, gemstones in all colors are incorporated into necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Favorites include shades of purple and pink – amethyst and pink topaz or their cubic zirconia sisters. Other popular gemstones this season are peridot and opal. Lapis lazuli and moonstones are also being seen on a variety of jewelry designs.

Sant Antoni Barcelona – An Alternative to Las Ramblas

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Any one looking for a little authenticity and local proficiency must stray further afield than the touristy stretches along Las Ramblas. On the surface Sant Antoni, ensconced between the Raval, the Eixample and the Poble Sec, appears like little more than a sleepy, residential area. Young oldsters watching their kids as they clamber on the monkey bars. Dog lovers of all stripes mooching up and down Avinguda Mistral with their canine companions. Groups of teens with wildly gelled hair and fashionable lip piercings bunched around park benches. Simply a few blocks from the Montjuic Park, the locale feels removed from the urban chaos of the town centre.

wandering through Sant Antoni in the dusk – or on a weekend afternoon – is evidence that tapas have not become the sole terrain of the visitor traps on Las Ramblas, the expensive fusion joints in the Born or the nameless chains along the Passeig de Grcia. The’hora del vermut’ is a Spanish custom easily woven into the fabric of humdrum life in Sant Antoni, 2nd nature to most locals and enthusiastically embraced by many that have made Barcelona their adopted home. mid-morning, around 12pm, as a predecessor to a giant lunch with family or friends.

Casa Jacinta ( Tamarit, 154 ; 933 172 059 ) is a giant local fave. The bar prides itself on being an expert when it comes to the’vermouth hour.’ Customers get to choose from vintage vermouths, vermouth on tap, and wines from acclaimed regions like La Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Bierzo.

The Lovers of Picasso

Monday, March 29th, 2010

The Picasso Museum in Barcelona is in the heart of the old city on the Carrer Moncada and since its recent expansion now sprawls over a row of five Gothic palaces once – in late medieval times – home to Barcelona’s aristocrats.

Picasso though born in Malaga, moved to Barcelona with his family in 1895 and Barcelona was important to his formative years, with his first public exhibition at the Quatre Gats in 1897. The Museum, opened in 1963, hold an important collection of his early work.

The collection doesn’t immediately strike one as being a very extensive one. Among the early work, there are a couple of curious paintings of the beach at Barceloneta as it was 100 years ago, complete with donkeys and none of the landmarks to be seen there at present.

Probably the most famous work that the Barcelona collection does include are Las Meninas, a suite of 58 works analyzing Velázquez’s painting Las Menas, which the museum’s chronological collection suddenly jumps to. The Museu Picasso as it is known is the most visited art gallery in Barcelona and caters to over 1,000,000 visitors per year. This gallery is home to one of the World’s largest collection of Picasso’s artwork.

The museum’s curators have arranged the paintings in chronological order from Picasso’s early days to his final works. Arranging the paintings in this way gives a person an interesting insight into the development of Picasso thinking over time and shows how he developed the distinctive designs that he is famous for.

Live Music in Barcelona

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Apolo and Sala Apolo are located in the Theatre district of Paral·lel and have been rocking the beat on the Barcelona music scene for years. Booked as a live venue for artists such as Paul Weller, the grungy old theatre serves as a perfect backdrop for the alternative crowd. This is also one of the venues selected for the warm-up parties for some of the summer festivals such as Primavera sound and the Sonar music festival. Mid-week sees Flamenco and Rumba sessions, as well as the “Nasty Mondays” night which has earned its fame on the circuit. Sala Apolo is located on Nou de la Rambla, number 111- just across the main Paral·lel Avenue.

Just a short stroll away from Apolo, and perhaps a place to start the night, or definitely on the way there is London Bar. London Bar is an institution in the city (as bears the Council floor plaque to boot) and has been serving up impromptu concerts and great bands for the old town residents for decades. London bar is a narrow and deep bar, with Becks on tap (one of the few places in town), friendly owners and staff and great music crammed in on a weekend. Expect anything from a 2 piece guitar combo to a full brass swing band. London Bar is also on Carrer Nou de la Rambla, number 34.

Vegetarian Restaurants in Barcelona

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Barcelona is a great place to find food with the eclectic mix of kitchens from around the world inviting you to try anything from Cebiche to Kow Neow, as well as the fantastic local specialties too numerous to name. The Spanish have an obsession with meat, and Pork in particular (they sell the brains in the supermarket, right alongside the trotters, ears and tails for God’s sake!) and most restaurants will offer you cured hams, roasted of grilled meats or at least have a very meat orientated menu – which is not much fun if you’re a Vegetarian or a Vegan.

I’m going to give you the lowdown on Vegetarian and (mainly) Vegan options if you’re visiting Barcelona. If you don’t know the city well, it’s of pure co-incidence that these restaurants are all fairly close together, considering the size of Barcelona, and the scope it has for restaurants.

First up is Juicy Jones. Juicy Jones has a couple of establishments – both in the old town. The one just off Las Ramblas, on Carrer Cardenal Casañas behind the PC City computer store is more of a Juice Bar, whereas the onelocated on Carrer Hospital is a little bigger. Juicy Jones offers the freshest ingredients for some fantastic concoctions and always a varied menu. Well worth a try.
